Student Alliance Fighting Exploitation (SAFE) Anti- Human Trafficking Organization |  Executive Board President

SAFE is a student organization at FIU that I served as the E-board President for the 2016-2017 academic year. My duties included re-establishing SAFE as an official organization at FIU with an E-board, Constitution, and new vision & mission.

The vision of SAFE is;

"To be FIU's catalyst organization in ending modern day slavery"

The  mission of SAFE is;

"AAAP:

AWARE:  Ensure holistic awareness of human trafficking among the FIU community

AVOID: Equip the FIU community with the tools and resources to prevent (avoid) people from becoming victims of human trafficking

AID: Provide volunteer service and raise funds towards organizations who are combating human trafficking

PARTNER: Create partnerships with FIU organizations and departments committed to ending human trafficking"

In the Spring of 2017  SAFE hosted the following events on campus: End It Movement Day, Training: What is human trafficking, Training: How to do street outreach, Street Outreach: Downtown Miami/Ultra Festival, Internship Fair, & 2017-2018 E-Board Elections

FIU 4 Freedom  |  Volunteer  & Special Events Coordinator

FIU 4 Freedom is a network of students and staff from various organizations at FIU who desire to creatively educate others on the reality of human trafficking in South Florida and globally. We do this by organizing Freedom Week, a series of events and artwork on campus designed to raise awareness concerning trafficking, and challenge students to connect with local organizations to make a difference. I served as the Volunteer & Special Events Coordinator for FIU 4 Freedom in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

FIU Language  Day

Part of being a global citizen and having a career in International Affairs is being highly proficient in foreign languages. At FIU I have had the privilege of studying Haitian Creole under the teaching of native Haitian professors. I was a 2016-2017 FLAS Fellow in the Kimberly Green Latin American & Caribbean Center with a focus on translation and interpretation between Creole and English. In the Spring of 2017 I embarked on an independent study with Professor Nicholas Andre that I believe is beneficial for formalized learning of Creole by English speakers.

During this independent study I was an Incubator on the language learning app Duolingo ensuring that English speakers can learn Creole on their electronic devices. Translation services in Creole are usually produced by American missionaries who have lived in Haiti for short periods of time but have no formal training in the language. Differing text and translations can be detrimental to learners which hinders the process of communication and collaboration between English speaking aid entities and Haitians. With my Creole proficiency and mentorship from Professor Andre I have created an enduring and accessible learning platform through the formalization of Creole syntax, semantics, and grammar. This in turn will mitigate difficulties in aid endeavors to Haiti. Visit Duolingo to learn a new language for free!

My career goal is to lead humanitarian efforts within a faith-based organization offering relief, development and advocacy for vulnerable populations. I aspire to implement resolutions to macroscale and microscale matters that negatively impact disenfranchised nations and populations.

"The Global Challenges of Refugees and Migrants: Puerto Ricans as an Internally Displaced Persons"
INR 3045  The Global Challenge of Refugees and Migrants
Mentors: Dr. Marcie Washington (PIR) and Dr. Derrick Scott (GSS)
The use of their U.S. citizenship to emigrate from the island has labeled Puerto Ricans in cities like Orlando or the Bronx as internally displaced persons. As the internally displaced persons population continues to increase, it is in the United States government’s interest to create systemic change in Puerto Rico that will alleviate the sociological forces causing migration. Reformation will only be successful by amending the status of Puerto Rico to reflect statehood or independence. Completed through the Spring and Fall of 2016 this has been my top research experience at FIU, which was presented in a poster format. To view this research poster  click the underlined title for this project.
"Nation Building in the Old Testament and its influence on United States Politics"
INR 4013 Development of International Relations Thought
Mentor: Dr. Iqbal Akhtar (PIR)

The bureaucracy of the United States is a reflection of the nation building, polity, provision, and protection practices found in the the Old Testament. This paper from Fall 2016 analyzes what developments of political thought in the Old Testament, specifically under Moses’s leadership, have influenced the United States’ political thought. To view this research paper click the underlined title for this project.
